Some stories are best left untold… but thankfully, Neil D’Silva doesn’t believe in that! With Devputra, he delivers yet another compelling read, a supernatural thriller that interweaves mythology, karma, and psychological horror. Known for his gripping storytelling in Yakshini, Maya’s New Husband, and Ringa Ringa Roses, D’Silva once again takes his readers on an intense, eerie, and thought-provoking journey.
A Tale of Reincarnation, Karma, and Horror
Devputra follows the story of Aditya, who finds himself entangled in a supernatural ordeal—battling the consequences of someone else’s karma that has mysteriously become his own. The novel delves deep into themes of rebirth, reincarnation, and retribution, keeping the reader on edge with its dark tone and an unsettling sense of impending doom. The blend of mythology and contemporary horror is done skillfully, making it a standout in the genre.
The Strengths of Devputra
One of the book’s greatest strengths is its engaging and immersive writing. D’Silva keeps the reader hooked from the very beginning, with well-crafted scene transitions that make you constantly wonder, What happens next? His ability to build tension is commendable, and though the book isn’t outright terrifying, it creeps up on you with its eerie atmosphere and unsettling events.
The division of the book into three parts—Tamas, Rajas, and Sattva—adds an interesting structural element, tying in with Indian philosophical concepts. The first two parts are particularly gripping, filled with relentless pacing and psychological depth. The characters are relatable, flawed, and well-developed, making their struggles feel real.
Another highlight is the incorporation of mythology. D’Silva seamlessly incorporates references to ancient characters and beliefs, enriching the story and adding layers of meaning. The balance between modern horror and ancient wisdom is beautifully handled, making Devputra a treat for readers who enjoy mythological thrillers.
What Could Have Been Better
While Devputra is a compelling read, it does have a few shortcomings. The third part, Sattva, loses some of the earlier intensity and meanders into melodrama. While the inclusion of comic relief is a good touch, the transition from gripping horror to a more dramatic tone feels somewhat inconsistent.
Additionally, the novel seems to conflate the ideas of reincarnation and possession at times, which could have been more carefully researched and executed. The concept of split souls and how past personas manifest in the present isn’t entirely seamless, leaving some parts feeling a bit disjointed.
Final Verdict
Despite minor flaws, Devputra is a brilliant read, perfect for fans of dark fantasy, supernatural horror, and mythology-based fiction. The book is atmospheric, well-paced, and filled with strong, memorable characters. D’Silva’s signature storytelling prowess ensures that the reader remains engaged till the very end.
If you love mythology-infused horror that delves into deep existential questions about karma and destiny, Devputra is a must-read. Even if you’re not typically into horror, the mythological elements and philosophical depth make it an intriguing read.
Rating: 3.5/5
Neil D’Silva once again proves why he is one of the most exciting contemporary authors in the horror-thriller space. Here’s hoping for more spine-chilling stories from him in the future!

Melodrama spoils horror stories.
